Cincinnati Bengals / New York Giants – Week 10 Recap

November 15, 2016 Nate Mallon 1 Comment

The Cincinnati Bengals missed a golden opportunity on Monday night. What could have been a huge, momentum-building victory to start the second half of the season turned into a deflating 21-20 loss to the New York Giants. What went right, and what went wrong? Bengals blog boys Nathan and Chris give their post game thoughts.

Chris: I was so excited about Tyler Eifert’s potential impact on the game. And when he caught the 71-yard pass on the first drive, I thought New York would have trouble containing the Bengals’ passing game all night. But the offense petered out after that, along with my confidence.

Dalton only went for 204 yards – paltry by his standards. No receiver broke 100 yards, and that was the key to the Giants’ win. They took away the strength of the Bengals’ offense. The rushing attack, while improved, hasn’t emerged as enough of a consistent threat to pick up the slack.

Nate: Watching this game was rather frustrating. The Bengals showed flashes of being a good team but mostly looked like a disinterest and unprepared group as the Giants gave them every opportunity to come out victorious.

The flashes: 1). Daltons 71 yard hookup with Tyler Eifert on the Bengals opening drive which ended in a 13 yard A.J. Green TD reception. 2). Dre Kirkpatrick made a nice INT that gave the Bengals great field position inside the Giants 10 yard line, they came away with only 3 points. And 3). Alex Erickson started the 2nd half with an 84 yard kickoff return which lead to Jeremy Hill running one in for TD which gave the Bengals a 17-14 lead early in the 3rd quarter.

The rest of the game was filled with things like the team going 2 for 11 on 3rd downs, terrible clock management with over a minute to go and a time out remaining, poor pass protection for Dalton, and allowing the leagues worst rushing attack to go for 122 yards on 27 attempts (4.5 ypa), not what Bengals fans hoped to see coming off a bye week.

Cincinnati Bengals/Washington Redskins – Week 7 Recap

October 30, 2016 Chris Russell Leave a Comment

The Cincinnati Bengals were in London for Week 8, battling the Washington Redskins to a 27-27 final score. Ricky Gervais’ clueless character from the British version of The Office would call it “Tie and Crumpets” or “The Battle in Beatles Land, if Half the Beatles Were Still Alive.” We call it a great game that could have had a better ending (i.e., a W).

Bengals’ running back Jeremy Hill scored on a 1-yard plunge with less than 7 minutes to go in regulation. That gave Cincinnati a 27-24 lead. Even with the offenses moving at warp speed up and down the field, Cincy hoped the 3-point lead would be enough to clinch the win. But Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins drilled a 40-yard field goal with 1:07 left on the clock to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the teams traded punts until Hopkins hooked a 34-yard field goal wide left with 2:13 to go. Andy Dalton (who threw for 284 yards) fumbled 5 plays later near midfield to give the Redskins one more chance. But Cousins and company could not get into field goal range and the game ended in a draw.

Things We Noticed From the Cincinnati Bengals-Washington Redskins Game

  1. It looked like the defenses were still weary from jet lag. We often give the Bengals’ D a hard time about not locking down the opposing QB, and there’s no reason to stop that now. Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 458 yards and 2 touchdowns. It wasn’t just the Bengals who struggled, though. The two teams combined for 961 yards of offense and 65 first downs.  Only Cincinnati defensive tackle Geno Atkins registered a sack for Cincinnati.
  2. There were missed kicks on both sides. Hopkins was off on 2 field goals (including the one in OT). Bengals’ kicker Mike Nugent sailed a 51-yarder wide left near the end of the first half. But it was his missed extra point in the 3rd quarter that made Cincy fans utter some NSFW words.
  3. Opposing defenses should hope AJ Green is contemplating an early retirement – it’s the only way he can be stopped. Green hauled in 9 receptions for 121 yards and drew 4 illegal-contact penalties from hobbled Washington DB Josh Norman.
  4. The Bengals’ running game may be turning a corner. For the second week in a row, Cincinnati rushed for more than 150 yards. Last week, they got 180 yards against the Browns. This week, they tallied 152. Yes, they were playing the 25th-ranked rushing defense in the league. But anytime you gain that much on the ground, you gotta feel good.

Week 4: Cincinnati Bengals vs Miami Dolphins – 4 Things to Watch

September 29, 2016 Chris Russell 1 Comment

The Cincinnati Bengals are back on their own turf  in Week 4, playing the 1-2 Miami Dolphins. It looks like a favorable matchup for the Bengals for a few reasons.

For one, Miami will be thin at outside linebacker with Koa Misi (neck) ruled out and Jelani Jenkins (groin) doubtful. Fewer LBs mean more snaps for the backups, who could be gassed by the fourth quarter. That brings a smile to our face. Let’s hope it also plays a part in bringing a W to our win column.

So without further ado, here are 4 things to watch for in the Cincinnati Bengals-Miami Dolphins Thursday night game.

1. Burfict is back. The heart of the Bengals D returns in LB Vontaze Burfict. He’s served his 3-game suspension for violating player safety rules, and now he’s ready to make the middle of the field unsafe for anyone wearing a fish (sorry, mammal) on the side of their helmet. It remains to be seen how many snaps he’ll play and what kind of impact he’ll make, but our hopes are “lots” and “big”.

2. Will Tyler Eifert play? He hasn’t appeared so far this year and is listed as doubtful for this game (though he could see a few snaps). But Cincinnati Bengals fans can’t wait for his 6’6″, 251-pound frame to be used in the red zone.

3. Balance is needed on offense. QB Andy Dalton lit up the Jets and Steelers with 366 yards each while the running game struggled. On Sunday against the Broncos, Dalton barely cracked the 200-yard mark, but running back Jeremy Hill scored twice. It’s time to put it all together.

4. Matchups, matchups, matchups. We’ll have some good ones. Our favorite is Cincinnati Bengals DT Geno Atkins against Miami 3rd-string center Kraig Urbik. Our less-than favorite is Dolphins DTs Ndamukong Suh and Jordan Phillips vs the Bengals interior of Bodine, Zeitler and Boling. The more we look at that sentence, the less we want to think about it.

Cincinnati Bengals vs Denver Broncos – Week 3 Recap

September 25, 2016 Chris Russell 1 Comment

Week 3 is in the books for the Cincinnati Bengals, and the team (and its fans) are happy to close this chapter. Why? For starters, it was a second straight loss to an AFC opponent – this time, 29-17 to the Denver Broncos. Also for the second consecutive game, the Bengals were the victim of bad officiating (as if last week wasn’t enough to make us reach for the Pepto-Bismol).

There were some positive things to come out of Sunday’s Cincinnati Bengals game.  But honestly, we’d be just fine if we were left with a W and another week to sort out any issues.

Good, Bad, and Ugly

The Bengals’ running game got out of the gutter, with Jeremy Hill rushing for 2 touchdowns and 97 yards. Quarterback Andy Dalton, however, didn’t have a Dalton-esque outing (206 yards, no TDs.) Neither of those stats really mattered, though. Denver QB Trevor Siemian was unstoppable, going for 312 yards and 4 scores on 23-35 passing.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ momentum was also killed as a result of 3 questionable penalties. The first involved illegal contact on DB Dre Kirkpatrick in the 1st quarter. Then Adam Jones “fumbled” the ball on a punt return even though his knee was down. Finally, O-lineman Kevin Zeitler got hit with a holding call that even announcer Dan Fouts expressed doubts over.

Even with all that, the Bengals found themselves leading 17-16 in the 3rd quarter. But the Broncos put together a 14-play drive that drained the defense, and receiver AJ Green had a rare drop that would’ve given the offense a first down and kept the D off the field to rest.

When Jones got banged up and had to leave the game, backup DB Chris Lewis-Harris was brought in … and then burned down for a 55-yard TD by the Broncos’ Demaryius Thomas.

Dalton had a pass tipped and intercepted soon after, and that was it. This week’s silver lining is that there isn’t much time to mourn over this one. That’s because there’s a Thursday night showdown against the Miami Dolphins right around the corner.

Cincinnati Bengals vs New York Jets – Week 1 Recap

September 11, 2016 Chris Russell 2 Comments

image1-1
Kicker Mike Nugent drilled a 47-yard field goal with less than a minute left to get Cincinnati’s season started off right. The kick accounted for the final points of the Bengals’ 23-22 win over the New York Jets. The Bengals have now won their past 3 season openers, and it’s a big first step for the team toward another trend of theirs: Making the playoffs.

Andy Dalton earned his paycheck today. The sixth-year veteran threw the football for 366 yards and a touchdown, but he himself was thrown around all day by the Jets’ D (7 sacks). He may not need ibuprofen for the pain, though, as AJ Green’s stats (12 catches, 180 yards, 1 TD – much of that against Pro Bowler Darrelle Revis) should help him feel better.

In our last article, one of the battles we said to keep an eye on was the Bengals’ running attack versus the Jets’ stout rushing defense. The number should not surprise anyone –Cincinnati’s ground game eked out just 57 yards, and starter Jeremy Hill only mustered 31 of them.

Despite having an almost 9-minute edge in time of possession, the Jets were outgained 381-340. It didn’t help that they committed 7 penalties for 95 yards, and it REALLY didn’t help that Cincinnati defensive end Margus Hunt showed up like he did, defending 2 passes and blocking a field goal in the first quarter. The Jets’ kicking game suffered another why-did-this-happen-now moment when Nick Folk broke his streak of 312 PATs with a wide-right attempt after WR Eric Decker‘s second-quarter touchdown catch.

It was the first win for the Bengals in their last 10 tries in New Jersey. Next up: a visit to Pittsburgh on September 18.
