No surgery for rookie Price

September 19, 2018 Caleb Pierson Leave a Comment

Will miss at least two weeks.

For now, the Bengals will be without rookie center Billy Price.

Bengals fans received both good and bad news on the centers status Wednesday. The good, Price’s injury is not a season ending injury. The bad, he will miss at least two games with the injury. As of now he will miss games against the Panthers and Falcons, leaving him questionable for a week 5 matchup versus the Dolphins. He could end up missing more time once they reevaluate in two weeks.

Billy Price said finally figured out what his injury was. Foot, not ankle. Not Lisfranc. He’s in a boot 24/7, then Re-evaluate in 2 weeks.

Price was off to a very promising start for the Bengals and you could see his impact in both the run and pass protection. Backup Trey Hopkins will start in his place. Filling in last week versus the Ravens, Hopkins gave up just one pressure in 36 pass blocks. A nice effort against a tough Ravens defense. Hopefully, Hopkins can continue to play at a high level in Prices absence. A crushing blow none the less after hearing of Mixon’s injury earlier in the week.

The next two games will be a big test to see how this new look Bengals team can adapt to this adversity.

Bengals To Watch In Preseason Week 1

August 9, 2018 Caleb Pierson Leave a Comment

The Bengals play the Chicago Bears in preseason game number 1. Below are key players to keep an eye on during the game.

1. Billy Price – Center – A lot of people will say that the Bengals were targeting Frank Ragnow with their first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, but as many of you know he was taken just ahead of the Bengals pick by the Detroit Lions. The Bengals ended up with former Ohio State center, Billy Price instead. Price injured himself at the 2018 combine, hurting his draft stock, but is back healthy and expected to start right away for the Bengals offensive line. Price has been struggling with getting clean snaps to Andy Dalton all during training camp. Price is sure to be the “center” of attention on offense tonight, as he is expected to start with the first team.

2. Joe Mixon – Running Back – The Bengals 2017 second round pick is facing tall orders this year with high expectations from inside and outside the organization. Mixon struggled as a rookie, in large part to the offensive line, but showed flashes of greatness throughout the year. Now, as the unquestioned starter, and Jeremy Hill gone to New England, Mixon is expected to be the Bengals three down bell cow. Mixon is also setting big goals for himself for 2018, when asked if he has his touchdown dances ready he responded, “I have one for every game”. Bengals fans everywhere will be hoping he can showcase 16 touchdown dances this year.

3. Cedric Ogbuehi vs. Bobby Hart – Right Tackle – The Bengals spent a first round pick on Ogbuehi back in 2015, and up until now has been a bust for the Bengals. The New York Giants used a seventh round pick on Hart in the same draft. Now, in 2018, both will be battling it out for the right tackle position on the Cincy o-line. This is one of the key position battles to watch during the preseason. For now, Hart is being listed as the starter but coach Marvin Lewis eluded that there is no official first team yet, which means the right tackle spot is still up for grabs. Expect Hart to start tonight, with Ogbuehi expected to get a lot of time with the second team.

4. John Ross – Wide Receiver – It would be impossible to write this without mentioning former first round pick John Ross. After a disastrous rookie campaign, Ross is back healthy and turning heads in camp. So much in fact that the Bengals released veteran Brandon LaFell. Ross is now expected to be the Bengals WR2 and line up on the outside opposite of AJ Green, replacing LaFell. With Green pulling the safety to his side of the field, Ross could see favorable one on one matchups this year. With no lack of speed or pedigree, Ross could
be the missing piece to pull the Bengals back to the top of the NFL ranks. He will be the number one fan favorite to watch tonight.

Have the Cincinnati Bengals Fixed the O-Line for 2018?

May 11, 2018 Chris Russell 1 Comment

Good news first: if the offensive line of the Cincinnati Bengals had played at the college level in 2017, they’d have been first-team All Americans.

Bad news: they played in the NFL and like players fresh out of college, and that led to the team being dead last in the league in total offense. The Bengals averaged only 280.5 yards of offense per game.

It’s a painful reminder of how the line struggled in recent years under long time O-line coach Paul Alexander. He was let go in the off-season by coach Marvin Lewis and subsequently hired for the same position by the Dallas Cowboys.

Which is funny, because Cincy did the same thing in reverse. They hired Frank Pollack, who was fired by Dallas. We call it the Circle of Life – except it has nothing to do with either a circle or life. (awkward pause ……) Let’s move on, shall we?

Here are some other moves that will hopefully get the Cincinnati Bengals’ ability to move the ball off the NFLoor.

What Have the Cincinnati Bengals Done?

Going for Glenn. Cincinnati swapped first-round draft picks with the Bills to get offensive tackle Cordy Glenn. The 6-6, 345 lb Buffalo Boulder (okay, we made that up) has started 77 games in his pro career. He was good enough in Buffalo to earn a 5-year, $65 million contract extension in 2016. Although he battled foot and ankle problems last year, he’s only 28 years old. He’s got plenty of time left.

What going for Glenn gets you. As part of the Glenn deal, the Cincinnati Bengals went from having the 12th pick in the draft to the 21st. And they still nabbed a promising prospect in Ohio State center Billy Price. Price won the Rimington Award (best center in college football) and was the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2017.

Adding more OTs. Bobby Hart came in from the Giants, which will hopefully provide some motivation for Jake Fisher and Cedric Ogbuehi. The three will battle for the right tackle spot. The team did lose Andre Smith, but drafted Rod Taylor out of Mississippi in the seventh round.

Losing Bodine, gaining better. Ever hear the one about the Cincinnati Bengals losing Russell Bodine and becoming a worse football team? Yeah, neither have we. Plus, with the drafting of Price, there’s more potential for the line as a unit. Give Price a year or two to hit his stride and watch out for guards Christian Westerman and Alex Redmon, who played well toward the end of last season.

Getchu some Frank! The decision to hire Pollack was, no surprise, the most crucial move. He’s got plenty of young talent to work with. He’s brings the goods, as evidenced by his 2015 line in Dallas, which was very productive and had the fewest penalties in the league. If Pollack can bring the same production and discipline to the Bengals, look out.
