Bengals sign CB Bene’ Benwikere to 1-Year Deal

The Cincinnati Bengals have beefed up their secondary by signing cornerback Bene’ Benwikere. The Bengals inked him to a 1-year deal worth $690,000 (the league minimum) on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Bene’ Benwikere was drafted out of San Jose State by the Carolina Panthers in 2014. In 27 games, he compiled 102 total tackles, a sack, 4 forced turnovers and 3 fumble recoveries.

The 5th-rounder was cut after the October 2 game last year against the Atlanta Falcons. The reason? Julio Jones was so dominant (12 catches, 300 yards) that you’d think Carolina pulled one of the fans out of the nosebleed section to cover Jones.

Benwikere has fairly good size (5’11”, 195 pounds) and his presence helps with depth in the defensive backfield. That’s huge at this point since the crystal ball is cloudy on current Cincinnati DBs Dre Kirkpatrick, Adam Jones and Chykie Brown.


 

Bengals Claim CB KeiVarae Russell; Waive G Trey Hopkins

The Bengals claimed cornerback KeiVarae Russell off of waivers earlier today. Russell was a third round pick in this past years NFL Draft out of Notre Dame but was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs in what they call “a football move”. Reports were that he was passed up on the depth chart by sixth round pick D.J. White (Georgia Tech) and had trouble picking up the defensive system.

The Bengals waived guard Trey Hopkins to make room on the roster for Russell, he could be resigned to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Bengals placed cornerback William Jackson III and running back Cedric Peerman on IR today with the possibility that one of them can return and contribute later this season. To fill their roster spots they signed guard Trey Hopkins and corner Chykie Brown back to the roster. The team will only carry 3 running backs to start the season. Bengals Acquire QB Jeff Driskel; Waive LB P.J. Dawson; Sign 9 To Practice Squad

The Bengals acquired QB Jeff Driskel off of waivers today, Driskel was a 6th round pick by the 49ers out of Louisiana Tech. The team also waived LB P.J. Dawson in a surprise move to make room for Driskel. Dawson was a 3rd round pick last year out of TCU, there is a chance he could be signed to the teams practice squad later. Speaking of practice squad, the Bengals have signed 9 players so far and so there is currently 1 spot open for Dawson or another player. More moves to come soon.

Bengals Release Safety Jimmy Wilson

The Bengals released veteran defensive back Jimmy Wilson today. Wilson was signed prior to training camp and played 13 games for the San Diego Chargers last season and was with the Miami Dolphins before that from 2011 to 2014. The Bengals probably have the 4 safeties who will make the team on the roster now in George Iloka, Shawn Williams, Derron Smith and rookie 7th round draft pick Clayton Fejedelem.
